Influence

It has been a long while since I have posted anything here. I have been busy completing three years toward my B.A. in English and my senior year is underway. My current class (Creative Writing) has finally given me the space to take off the tight harness of academic writing rules, and it feels SO GOOD!! After reading my first assignment, Mom and Daddy gave it their thumbs up and suggested I make it a blog post, so here it is. It is my story and their story. It's a little longer than my usual posts, but as with everything I have ever posted here, I pray it encourages you to run "up the sunbeam to the sun" (C. S. Lewis). "Follow my example,  as I follow the example of Christ." 1 Corinthians 11:1 NIV I sat above them on the stairs. Looking down through the window-like openings in the partition between the living room and the stairway, I listened to the basketball players, football players, baseball players, wrestlers, track athletes, both the lettermen ...

The Door God Always Opens

Image
-- "Waiting impatiently for entrance, the boy glanced up at the arch. Words were chiseled in the old, moss covered stones:    WELCOME ALL WHO HUNT.  . . . And so the boy escaped from the perilous Enchanted City because he was a hunter at heart and hunters always find more than they know. " Tales of the Kingdom by David & Karen Mains I wish I'd written that last line. "he was a hunter at heart and hunters always find more than they know. " It rings a beautiful, crystal clear bell in my heart.  Like a tuning fork sounding the note you should tune to, a note you recognize, this resonates with the ring of truth.  So where have I heard that before . . .   Ah yes, I remember, it was my Jesus who said, "For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened." Luke 11:10 NIV Was Jesus saying that every door we knock on will be opened?  I think that would be answered with a resounding "NO!"  ...

Three Strikes and I Win?

Image
-- I had struck out f or the third time. In some games, that means you're out, but this time it meant I won! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A couple of weeks ago, I had hit a low spot, wondering if God was hearing me at all . My friend and Bible study leader had called me that Sunday afternoon and hearing the need in my heart, she prayed with me. It was such a comfort and uplift to hear someone else passionately, enthusiastically asking God to help us--I was tired of only hearing my own voice all the time! I went into the week, eager to see how God was going to work. Three times I had put in my application and been interviewed for posted positions in my office. On that Thursday, I got the word that for the third time I had not been selected. This time my friend (who is already in a position like the one I had applied for) came to talk to me as soon as she heard I had not received the sought-after promotion. "I'm so sorry!" she said, "I just heard." Her eyes s...

Never Forsaken

-- There is a doubting whisper swirling about during these uncertain days . . . have you heard it? People talk about it, wonder about it, don't know what to do a bout it . . . some even write blogs about it :) IT is the feeling that God is . . . nowhere to be found . . . distant . . . cold . . . ignoring our cries . . . indifferent to our suffering . . . somewhere else . . . too late . . . not coming . . . IT comes in many forms, but IT boils down to the sinking sensation that because we sometimes don't feel Him close, maybe He doesn't love us after all. IT . IS. A. LIE! But this well-crafted lie is so commonly FELT among skeptics and believers alike. We feel it when we're disappointed, when things don't go our way. We feel it when we're afraid, when we can't see around the bend. We feel it when stupid, earth-ish aggravations happen at absolutely the wrong time. We feel it when we ask Him for help and it appears to us that He hasn't and...
